Day five: Exodus 5
“Working 9 to 5…” – Dolly Parton
“Heigh Ho, Heigh ho, it’s off to work we go…” – The Seven Dwarves
“We’ve got to work, work, work this out” – High School Musical Ensemble (also my favourite song to was dishes to)
Listening to these inspirational singers, we see a theme: work.
Work is a central part of life. Our western world has become accustomed to morning cups of coffee foreshadowing the daily grind of work. It’s part of the busyness that grips our nation.
I wonder what work-songs the Israelites would have sung. They were made incredibly busy by the society they were surrounded by – Pharoah and the Egyptians. So when Aaron and Moses suggested freedom from God *gasp* and away from their work *GASP*, this was Pharaoh’s response in verse 4…
“But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!” Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.”
Pharaoh used work as an excuse to stop an experience of God for the Israelites. Does busyness get in the way between you and God? I know for me it does, it’s easy to when it’s built into us to never stop and never rest!
But God desired freedom for his people. He wants to encounter you. Despite busyness, despite work, despite tiredness from constantly being on the go, He can give you rest and actually when we make time with Him a priority we encounter Him in a deeper way.
Come and see what God has done.
Question for today: Are you too busy for God? How can you change that?
