Day nineteen: Exodus 19

There’s many a time I’ve promised I would do something and then just forgotten. Cleaning my room? Yep I’ll do that! Now I’m surrounded by countless socks. Send those photos I took? Yep no worries! Oops I really need to send those Christmas 2017 photos…

These parts of Exodus can feel like a lot of instructions, but actually they’re really important information from God about how He was going to guide them and how they ought to live. And the Israelite were so on board! Verse 8 tells us “The people all responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has said.” So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord.”

Unfortunately, their initial enthusiasm didn’t have stamina. This was a promise made by the Israelites but also broken by the Israelities. In the Bible we often see a bit of a “sin cycle” for God’s people which carries on throughout the judges and the prophets. They had passion at the start but they didn’t invest in obeying God and truly getting to know Him better… How class would it be to fully obey and really see the fruit of God’s work as we do?

I’m so thankful that God is still faithful no matter what and it’s not dependent on our fluctuating obedience, but also this story should inspire us to do our best to trust and obey. There’s a lot of weight in praying the words of verse 8. “God, your will not mine. I’m in this for you wanting to obey and live how you want me to live”. Maybe you want to pray that afresh today. It calls us to change. It calls us to challenge. But it also calls us to live fully with and for God.

Come and see what God has done.

Question for today: How can you say yes to God today?
