Day twenty-one: Exodus 21

Have you ever felt treated unfairly or not respected?

Well this chapter sets out the laws for Judges and I think that they are pretty respectful.

“These are the laws you are to set before them”, the rules show the valuableness of humans and why it’s so important to be understanding of each other and respect them, no matter of what position they are in life. The laws prevented crimes whilst also making sure that people were being treated fairly. I think that this is so important because it shows us how God is loving to all and wants to see everyone treated fairly no matter what society has deemed them to be.

What law stood out to you the most when you read this chapter? The laws surrounding the Hebrew servants really stood out in my mind; “in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything” even though

the master bought a servant, he may initially think that the servant is his forever but actually they are to be released and allowed to live their own lives out of being owned. The release after 6 years could be trying to reduce the number of servants and so that they aren’t being trapped for the entirety of their whole lives. This would also give them respect and allow them to freely and easily leave after the 6 years without having to beg for release.

We all need to try and be more respectful to others in daily life. In order for us to do this we need to pray and ask for God’s strength and courage when we go about our daily business; we could also ask a close friend or family member to hold us accountable so that we don’t forget to be more respectful.

Come and see what God has done.

Question for today:Who are you going to ask to keep yourself accountable for being more respectful?
