WHAT IS TOM?

Team on Mission is the gap year programme in the Methodist Church in Ireland for 18-25-year-olds. It has been running for over 27 years – before that, it was called YET (Youth Evangelism Team) and that ran for 12 years. The mission has and always will be to answer the call of Jesus – to love God and others and to make disciples.

The work is mostly with young people and children but the team also get involved in the whole life of the church Activities include kids clubs, school assemblies, BB’s and GB’s, church services, youth fellowships, drop-in’s, luncheon clubs, prayer rooms, large scale events and more.

Your year with Team On Mission is about experiencing life with new people in new places. The team is invited by churches all around Ireland to spend time with the church family and to work with the children and young people.

Team On Mission gives you experience and training in youth and children’s work – including an accredited OCN (Open College Network) level 2 award in Youth Work Practice.

Our hope and prayer is that Team on Mission encourages, challenges and supports your relationship with God That you develop new skills, discover new gifts from God and be rooted in who He has created you to be.

WHO IS TOM FOR?

Anyone who is aged between 18 and 25 years old and wants an opportunity to impact the lives of children and young people across Ireland. Do you want to take a year to serve God, learn new skills, experience new places and meet lots of new people? You don’t need to be in a certain stage of life – you could be leaving school, leaving university, in a job, wanting a career break – wherever you are TOM Team could be for you.

You’re here to be light – bringing out the God-colours in the world.

You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16

SAY HELLO TO TOM30!

JODIE WALKER, 18
JODIE WALKER, 18TOM30
Hi! I’m Jodie from Donegal Methodist church. I love playing the guitar and sports, especially soccer. After a lot of prayer and seeking God’s plans for this year, I felt God calling me to take a gap year. I have seen previous TOM team’s in action and I fell in love with the work that they do with children and young people. I’m really excited to meet new people and gain new life experiences, whilst sharing God’s love and deepening my relationship with Him!

BEN McGURK, 18TOM30
Hi, my name’s Ben! I’m from Newtownabbey and I go to Glengormley Methodist Church. My main hobbies include photography and I pretty much enjoy getting out of the house to do anything! I am really looking forward to see how God works in churches all over Ireland, as well as getting to experience new things and meeting new people.
NATALIE CAVANAGH, 18
NATALIE CAVANAGH, 18TOM30
Hello, I’m Natalie and I’m from Cavehill Methodist Church in Belfast. I am a very creative person, I always have to be doing something, whether that’s making a crochet square, doodling on the corner of the page, randomly singing the same line, or taking photos of pretty landscapes and flowers. I’m really excited for this year as it is something I have felt called to do for a very long time and I can’t wait to see the difference that I can make in people’s lives.
PETER McCREA, 18
PETER McCREA, 18TOM30
Hey! I’m Peter and I am from Seymour Street Methodist in Lisburn. Some of my hobbies include reading and playing football. I applied to TOM30 because I felt that God was pushing me towards taking a gap year where He was at the centre. Throughout the next year I’m really looking forward to see how God is going to work in my life and how he is going to use me to help others.

Those who have taken part in TOM team have benefited so much; they have learnt new skills, developed new gifts and discovered more of what God is calling them to.

“For me, TOM team was a year to take a step of faith, completely trusting in God and allowing him to use me in ways I never imagined. It revealed gifts in me that I didn’t know I had, allowed me to learn more about God’s character. I was constantly inspired by all the people I met and every single day I got to see God at work! If it wasn’t for TOM team and a God who never fails, I wouldn’t be the person I am today”
