Team on Mission is the gap year programme in the Methodist Church in Ireland for 18-25-year-olds. It has been running for over 27 years – before that, it was called YET (Youth Evangelism Team) and that ran for 12 years. The mission has and always will be to answer the call of Jesus – to love God and others and to make disciples.

The work is mostly with young people and children but the team also get involved in the whole life of the church Activities include kids clubs, school assemblies, BB’s and GB’s, church services, youth fellowships, drop-in’s, luncheon clubs, prayer rooms, large scale events and more.

Your year with Team On Mission is about experiencing life with new people in new places. The team is invited by churches all around Ireland to spend time with the church family and to work with the children and young people.

Team On Mission gives you experience and training in youth and children’s work – including an accredited OCN (Open College Network) level 2 award in Youth Work Practice.

Our hope and prayer is that Team on Mission encourages, challenges and supports your relationship with God That you develop new skills, discover new gifts from God and be rooted in who He has created you to be.

Anyone who is aged between 18 and 25 years old and wants an opportunity to impact the lives of children and young people across Ireland. Do you want to take a year to serve God, learn new skills, experience new places and meet lots of new people? You don’t need to be in a certain stage of life – you could be leaving school, leaving university, in a job, wanting a career break – wherever you are TOM Team could be for you.

You’re here to be light – bringing out the God-colours in the world.

You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16

Hi, I’m Gavin and I’m really excited to be on Team on Mission. I currently live in Dublin, but I grew up in Sligo. I love reading and music. One of my biggest passions is worship and I’m involved with leading worship in my church, Dundrum Methodist, as well as being a member of the Autumn Soul Band. I can’t wait to see how God is going to move this year!
My name is Amy McSharry and I’m currently living in Sligo and attending Sligo City Church. I love playing drums and guitar. I also love reading, frisbee, and puzzles and hope to teach Maths and Geography in the future. I’m super excited for this year as God is finally guiding me into the gap year that He called me to a long time ago. With TOM29, I am looking forward to seeing God move in so many different ways through many different people! I’m a bit nervous but still so excited!
I’m Anna, I’m from Seymour Street Methodist in Lisburn. The idea of the team appealed to me because I’m passionate about children and young people finding their worth in Christ, so I decided to apply this year! I am very passionate about music because I love to sing; whether that be leading people in worship or through my love of musical theatre! I also really enjoy getting to know people and the things that they enjoy doing and meeting people from different backgrounds and areas. I’m really excited to be able to serve God all over Ireland and to get to know Him better in new ways.
Hiya! My name is Rebekka, I’m 20 years old, I am from Lurgan and go to High Street Methodist Church. I have wanted to apply to Tom Team for about five years now and I love to work with children and young people. Some of my interests and hobbies include singing and dancing and I love the banter! I’m excited to see the work that God is going to do this year not only in my life but with people we meet and work with.
Hey everyone! My name is Andrew, I’m 18 and I’m from Priesthill Zion Methodist Church. I enjoy reading and singing low notes for no reason whatsoever…I don’t know why either. I applied for TOM Team as I felt that God was pushing me to take a Gap year and apply. During the time of applying to Universities, I did a lot of praying and felt God was telling me to apply to TOM. I’m really excited for this year and the things that God is going to do!

Those who have taken part in TOM team have benefited so much; they have learnt new skills, developed new gifts and discovered more of what God is calling them to.

“For me, TOM team was a year to take a step of faith, completely trusting in God and allowing him to use me in ways I never imagined. It revealed gifts in me that I didn’t know I had, allowed me to learn more about God’s character. I was constantly inspired by all the people I met and every single day I got to see God at work! If it wasn’t for TOM team and a God who never fails, I wouldn’t be the person I am today”

Hannah Myles, TOM 26

  • Think and Pray about applying
  • Talk to others who have experience and who will support you
  • Request on online application form (these are available from January of each year)
  • Fill in an online application and complete by Friday, 30th March 2018
  • Put the interview date in your diary – Saturday, 21st April 2018
    • Interviews are carried out as a mixture of group and individual interviews. We prefer everyone to attend these but we also understand that this may not be possible so if the date is proving difficult for you, contact us and we will consider rearranging.
  • £1800
  • Don’t panic!
  • You are required to raise this to help fund your year on team – get this information to your congregation and think about fund raising ideas. When people give you support in this way they are more likely to keep in touch and pray for you during the year.
  • Money can be paid in one lump sum at the start of the year or in 4 monthly instalments of £450 in September, October, November and December.
  • IMYC will receive your application and write to your references.
  • While we are dealing with your application we will be in contact with churches that are interested in booking a team on mission.
  • Await contact about your interview.
  • You will travel around Ireland to different churches and take part in the life of the church, mainly focusing on the youth and children’s work but also getting involved in other aspects of church life.
  • When you’re not on mission you will live and work as a team in Belfast – planning for missions, doing team Bible studies and enjoying good days of rest.
  • Throughout the year you will receive training that is relevant to youth and children’s work and attend team retreats.
  • You will be given a mentor for the year to support, challenge and encourage your faith.
  • You will have a pastoral one-on-one every month or so from a staff member.
  • IMYC staff are there to support and encourage you as you plan and prepare for missions and develop your gifts and skills.
  • Training begins on Monday, 3rd September 2018 and takes place in Belfast for 3 weeks. The year ends on Saturday, 10th August 2019.
  • That’s ok! Not all team members drive.
  • Officially you get 2 weeks at Christmas, a week at Easter and a few days after training to recover.
  • Each week you have at least one full day off and you work 2 out of 3 sessions on the other days.
  • If time off is needed for other things that’s no problem – everything is negotiable.
  • The team flat is on Fountainville Avenue near Queen’s University.
